General nursing is a branch of nursing that deals with the care of patients in all settings. Midwifery is a branch of nursing that deals with the care of women during pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period. General nurses and midwives work together to provide comprehensive care to patients.
What is it?
GNM stands for General Nursing Midwifery. It is a three-year undergraduate course, in Allied Healthcare for females wherein students are trained in maternal and child health along with family planning services, health and nutrition education, efforts for maintaining environmental sanitation, immunisation for the control of communicable diseases, treatment of minor injuries, and first aid in emergencies and disasters.
Scope
After completing GNM, a student becomes NURSE and can avail various opportunities in –
Government Sector
GNM nursing vacancy is increasing due to the high demand for nursing professionals in government sectors as Nurse Supervisor, General Duty Medical Officer, Healthcare Administrator, Pediatric Nurse, etc in District Hospital, Community health centres, Primary Health Centre etc.
Private Sector
Various private companies and Hospitals are offering GNM Nursing career opportunities for aspirants after completing their GNM Nursing course as Certified Nurse Manager, Healthcare administrator, Infection control nurse, Patient Care Coordinator, Pediatric nurse, etc.

- Intermediate or XIIth equivalent with minimum 40% marks from either Arts (English subject compulsory) or Science Background
